The AMCAS personal statement, called the Personal Comments essay, has a limit of 5,300 characters, and spaces count as characters. The AAMC says that is about one page of text, and the application shows an error message if you go over.

In words, 5,300 characters is roughly 800 to 1,000 words for typical English prose, depending on how long your words are. The character limit is the only one that counts, so measure characters, not words, before you paste your essay in.

What is the AMCAS Personal Comments character limit?

According to the AAMC's pages for the AMCAS application, the Personal Comments essay:

  • allows 5,300 characters, including spaces;
  • is required of every applicant;
  • is sent to every medical school you apply to;
  • cannot be changed after you submit the application, not even to fix a typo.

The AAMC publishes the rules for each application cycle in its AMCAS Applicant Guide and workbook. The figures here were checked against the AAMC pages for the 2027 cycle on 2026-10-22. If you apply in a later cycle, check the current guide, because the AAMC can change the rules.

How many words is 5,300 characters?

It depends on your writing. Characters include every letter, space and punctuation mark, so long words use the limit faster than short ones.

We measured it on real text: the opening paragraphs of 21 earlier posts on this blog average 5.63 characters per word, spaces included, with individual posts ranging from 5.13 to 6.71. At those rates:

Writing styleCharacters per wordWords in 5,300 characters
Short, plain words5.13about 1,030
Average on our blog5.63about 940
Long, technical words6.71about 790

So a draft of 1,000 words may fit or may not. Do not plan by words alone; paste the draft into a character counter and read the characters with spaces figure.

What counts as a character in the AMCAS essay?

Every letter, digit, space and punctuation mark counts. A few details to watch:

  • Line breaks. Paragraph breaks are characters too, and our counter includes them. The AMCAS form decides how it treats them, so leave a small margin rather than writing to exactly 5,300.
  • Formatting does not survive. The AAMC's workbook says schools receive text answers as plain text. Bold, italics, bullet lists and indented paragraphs are not available, so write in plain paragraphs.
  • Special characters. Curly quotes and long dashes from a word processor may be changed when pasted. Check the essay in the form after pasting.

How do you check your essay before pasting it?

  1. Write the essay in plain paragraphs, with no formatting.
  2. Paste the final draft into our character counter. Read Characters (with spaces).
  3. If you are over, cut and recount. If you are far under, add substance, not filler.
  4. Keep a margin of a few dozen characters for anything the form counts differently.
  5. Paste into the AMCAS form and read its own count and any error message. The form's count is the one that decides.

Our counter runs in your browser, so your essay is not uploaded or stored. The word counter is useful too, to see how many words and paragraphs you have and whether one paragraph is much longer than the rest.

How do you cut an essay that is over 5,300 characters?

Cut what the reader does not need before you cut what they do:

  • Repeated points. If two paragraphs make the same case, keep the stronger one.
  • Setup sentences. "I would like to begin by describing" can usually go.
  • Long phrases. "Due to the fact that" becomes "because".
  • List-like passages. A list of activities belongs in the experiences section of the application, not the essay.

Save each version and compare them with the text diff checker, so you can see exactly what you removed and put back anything important. For a step-by-step method with real counts, see how to shorten text to a character limit. If you are short instead, how to reach a word count without padding works for characters too. And if a brief speaks in pages instead, how many words fit on a page gives the usual estimate.

Whatever you change, read the final version aloud once. Cuts made in a hurry often leave a sentence that no longer connects to the one before it.
