How Many Words Is 5 Pages Double Spaced? (1 to 10 Pages)
Published 5 min read
On this page
Five pages double spaced is about 1,250 words. Five pages single spaced is about 2,500 words. Both numbers assume a standard setup: 12 pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins and a normal paragraph layout, which fits roughly 250 words on a double-spaced page and 500 on a single-spaced one.
That is a rule of thumb, not an official standard. The table below covers 1 to 10 pages, and the rest of this guide explains why your own document may land a little higher or lower, and how to check it in seconds.
How many words per page? The table for 1 to 10 pages
Every row uses the same rule: about 250 words per double-spaced page and about 500 per single-spaced page. The 1.5-spaced column sits in between, at about 375 words per page.
| Pages | Double spaced | 1.5 spaced | Single spaced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 250 | 375 | 500 |
| 2 | 500 | 750 | 1,000 |
| 3 | 750 | 1,125 | 1,500 |
| 4 | 1,000 | 1,500 | 2,000 |
| 5 | 1,250 | 1,875 | 2,500 |
| 6 | 1,500 | 2,250 | 3,000 |
| 7 | 1,750 | 2,625 | 3,500 |
| 8 | 2,000 | 3,000 | 4,000 |
| 9 | 2,250 | 3,375 | 4,500 |
| 10 | 2,500 | 3,750 | 5,000 |
Read the numbers as "about". A real page holds a range, not a fixed count, so treat each figure as the middle of that range.
Why is a double-spaced page about 250 words?
Double spacing roughly doubles the height of every line, so about half as many lines fit on the page. Half the lines means about half the words: 500 becomes 250. Nothing else changes, which is why the conversion is so simple.
The 500-words-per-page starting point comes from common defaults rather than a rule anyone enforces. With a 12 pt serif font and 1-inch margins, a full page of ordinary prose usually holds a little under or a little over 500 words. Change any of those settings and the number moves.
What changes the number of words on a page?
If your 5 pages come out at 1,100 or 1,400 words, one of these is usually the reason:
- Font and size. Wider fonts such as Arial or Calibri at 12 pt fit fewer words per line than Times New Roman. A smaller size fits more.
- Margins. Wider margins shrink the text area, so each page holds less.
- Paragraph length. Every new paragraph leaves part of a line empty. Lots of short paragraphs or dialogue use up pages faster.
- Headings, lists and quotes. A title block, section headings, bullet lists and block quotes take space without adding many words.
- Word length. Technical writing with long words fills lines faster than plain, short words.
- Spacing between paragraphs. Extra space before or after each paragraph adds up over five pages.
This is also why two students with the same assignment can both write "5 pages" and still differ by a few hundred words.
How do you check your own words per page?
You do not have to rely on an estimate. Measure your own document:
- Open the draft in your word processor and note how many pages it fills with the required formatting.
- Copy the full text and paste it into our word counter to get the exact number of words.
- Divide the words by the pages. That is your real words per page for this font and layout.
- Multiply by the number of pages you need. That is your target.
If the brief gives a limit in characters instead of words, paste the same text into the character counter. Both tools run in your browser, so your draft is never uploaded.
Should you aim for pages or for words?
Follow whatever the assignment actually measures. If it says "5 pages double spaced", the page count and the formatting are the requirement, and the word count is only a planning tool. If it says "1,250 words", the word count is the requirement, and the number of pages does not matter.
When the brief gives both, the word count is usually the stricter one, because it cannot be stretched with a bigger font or wider margins. Teachers and editors notice those tricks quickly, so it is better to add substance. If you are short of words, see how to reach an essay word count without padding. The same arithmetic works for talks. If your 5 pages are really a script, the useful number is speaking time; see how many words fit in a 2-minute speech.
Pages and words: quick answers
How many words is 5 pages single spaced?
About 2,500 words, using the common estimate of 500 words per single-spaced page.
How many pages is 1,000 words double spaced?
About 4 pages, because each double-spaced page holds roughly 250 words.
Does the title or the reference list count toward the pages?
That depends on the assignment. Many teachers count only the main text, so check the brief or ask.
Do headers and footnotes count in a word count?
In Google Docs, headers, footers and footnotes are left out of the word count unless you select them. Other tools have their own rules, so use one tool for the whole task.
