Instagram Bio Character Limit (and the Caption Limit)
Published 5 min read
On this page
The Instagram bio character limit is 150 characters. For captions, Meta's developer documentation gives a maximum of 2,200 characters, with up to 30 hashtags and 20 @ mentions per post. Spaces, line breaks, emoji and punctuation all use up part of the limit.
That is not much room for a bio, so every word has to work. Below is what counts, how to plan a bio that fits, and how to check both bio and caption before you save.
What is the Instagram bio character limit?
Instagram's Help Center says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters, and that anyone can see it. Your name, username and website link are separate fields, so they do not use up the 150.
In practice, the bio has to say three things in that space: who you are or what the account is about, why someone should follow, and what to do next. A plan that fits:
| Part | Example | Characters (with spaces) |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Home baker in Leeds | 19 |
| What you post | Weekly bread and cake recipes | 29 |
| Proof or detail | Tested in a tiny kitchen | 24 |
| Next step | New recipe every Sunday | 23 |
Joined with line breaks, that bio is under 100 characters, which leaves room for a hashtag or a mention. The example is made up for this guide; count your own with our character counter, which has an Instagram bio preset that shows how many characters are left.
What is the Instagram caption limit?
Meta's documentation for the Instagram Graph API lists a caption maximum of 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags. Instagram's Help Center gives the same hashtag maximum of 30 per post. The developer page covers posts made through Meta's API, so treat 2,200 as the documented limit and confirm in the app if you write close to it.
Long captions are allowed, but people see only the first lines before they tap to read more. Put the most important sentence first, then the detail.
What counts toward the limit?
- Spaces and line breaks. Each line break in a bio is a character, so a five-line bio costs four characters just for the breaks.
- Emoji. Instagram does not publish how it counts emoji. Our counter counts one emoji as one character, as a reader sees it. Leave a little margin if you use many.
- Hashtags and mentions. "#bread" is six characters, including the hash sign.
- Special fonts. "Fancy text" generators use unusual Unicode letters. They may look like normal letters, but screen readers often cannot read them, so plain text is the safer choice.
How do you write a bio that fits in 150 characters?
- Write a long version first, without counting.
- Cut filler words: "I am a", "welcome to my page", "official account of".
- Swap long phrases for short ones: "recipes every week" instead of "I share new recipes every week".
- Use line breaks for structure instead of long sentences, and count each break.
- Paste the result into the character counter and pick the Instagram bio preset.
- Save it in the app and check that nothing was cut.
If you copied a caption or bio from a document and it arrives full of odd line breaks, the remove line breaks tool joins the lines back together so you can place breaks where you want them. To fix capital letters, such as a bio typed with caps lock on, use the text case converter.
What makes a bio easy to read?
A bio is read in a second or two, often on a small screen, so clarity beats cleverness:
- One idea per line. Line breaks cost a character each, but they make a bio far easier to scan than one long sentence.
- Plain words first. Say what the account is about before any jokes or slogans.
- A clear next step. If you want people to tap your link, say why in a few words.
- Few emoji. One or two can mark a line; a row of them is harder to read and harder for screen readers.
How does Instagram compare with other platforms?
Every platform sets and counts its own limit. A bio is shorter than a standard X post, and X counts some characters differently, as explained in the Twitter character limit. The habit is the same everywhere: write, count, then confirm where you publish, because limits change.
