Short answer: Google sets no limit on meta description length. It cuts the snippet to fit the screen, at roughly 920 pixels on desktop and 680 pixels on a phone. That is about 147 characters of average text on desktop and about 108 on mobile.
To see where your own text would be cut, paste it into our free meta description length checker. It shows the character count and the estimated width on both screens. The rest of this guide explains the numbers and how to write to them.
What is a meta description?
A meta description is a short summary of a page in the <meta name="description"> tag. Google may show it under your title in the results, which is why people call it the snippet.
A good description helps a searcher decide whether your page answers their question. It is not a place to repeat keywords. Treat it as a short, honest promise about what the page offers.
Is there a meta description character limit?
No. Google's guide to controlling your snippets in search results says there is no limit on how long a meta description can be. It also says snippets are shortened as needed, typically to fit the width of the device.
Two more points from that guide matter:
- Google builds most snippets from the text of the page itself.
- It uses your meta description when that describes the page better than the page text does.
So a "160 character limit" is not a Google rule. It is an estimate of how much text usually fits before the cut.
How many characters fit in a Google snippet?
On desktop, about 147 characters of average text fit in the roughly 920 pixels of a snippet line. On a phone, about 108 fit in roughly 680 pixels. We measured these averages in 14px Arial, the same estimate our checker uses.
| Screen | Estimated width | Average text that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | About 920 px | About 147 characters |
| Mobile | About 680 px | About 108 characters |
These are averages, not promises. Wide letters such as W and M take more room than narrow ones such as i and l, so the real cut can come 10 or more characters earlier or later. Google also changes its layout from time to time.
How long should a meta description be?
Write about 120 to 150 characters, and put the main point in the first 100 or so. That length gives a full summary on desktop, while a phone still shows the part that matters.
Many SEO guides quote 120 to 160 characters. That range is common advice, but the top end often runs past the desktop width. In our measurements, a 157-character description was already about 956 pixels wide, so the last words would be cut.
Meta description character count: what counts?
Every letter, digit, space and punctuation mark counts as one character. "Free tool." is 10 characters: eight letters, one space and one period.
Two descriptions with the same number of words can be very different in length, because long words and punctuation add up. If you are not sure which measure to use, read the difference between word count and character count. For descriptions, characters and width are what matter.
Why is the mobile snippet shorter?
A phone screen is narrower, so less text fits before Google cuts the snippet. The same description that shows in full on a laptop can lose its last sentence on a phone.
The safe habit is simple. Make sure the first 100 characters make sense on their own, and treat the rest as extra detail that desktop readers may see.
How do you check meta description length?
Use a checker that estimates width on both screens. It takes under a minute:
- Write the description in a plain text editor.
- Paste it into the checker. Open the description length checker. The desktop and mobile bars fill up as you type.
- Read the status. Too long means the end will probably be cut on desktop. A full mobile bar shows roughly what a phone may keep.
- Trim from the end. Cut the least useful words, not the opening, and check again.
To see the description with its title and URL, preview the full search result. If you are drafting a longer summary first, the word counter helps you check the draft. The headline above the snippet has its own guide to meta title length, and headline style for your page title covers capital letters.
Good meta description examples
Here are three made-up examples with their character counts and estimated desktop widths:
- 143 characters, about 903 px, good on desktop: "Learn how to bake sourdough bread at home with a simple 3-day schedule, a step-by-step starter guide and tips for a crisp crust and open crumb." The key promise sits at the start, so a phone that cuts it still shows the point.
- 157 characters, about 956 px, slightly too long: "Count characters, words and spaces in any text. Paste it in, see the totals update as you type, and check limits for posts, bios and forms. Free, no sign-up." A clear description, but "no sign-up" would probably be cut on desktop.
- 179 characters, about 1,168 px, weak: "Welcome to our website. We offer many great tools and resources for everyone. Read on to find out more about what we do and why our customers love us so much and keep coming back." Too long, and the first 100 characters say nothing specific.
How do you write a description that gets clicks?
- Start with the answer. Say what the page does or explains, in plain words.
- Name the task. "Check the length of your text" is clearer than "A useful resource".
- Use the search phrase once, naturally. Results often show matching words in bold.
- Write a new one for every page. A copied description tells nobody which page to choose.
- Promise only what the page delivers.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a meta description be?
About 120 to 150 characters works well, with the main point in the first 100. Google sets no limit, but text past roughly 920 pixels, about 147 average characters, is usually cut on desktop.
What is the meta description length on mobile?
About 680 pixels, or roughly 108 characters of average text. Phones show less than desktop, so put the key message first.
Is 160 characters a hard limit?
No. Google has no official limit. Many 160-character descriptions are already too wide for desktop, so check the width instead of trusting a count.
Do spaces count in a meta description?
Yes. Spaces and punctuation are characters and take up room in the snippet, so check the total with spaces.
Does Google always use my meta description?
No. Google builds most snippets from the page content. It uses your meta description when that describes the page better.
