What lorem ipsum is
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: words in a Latin-looking style that carry no real meaning. Designers, developers and writers drop it into a page so they can see how the layout will look once real content arrives. This generator creates it for you in paragraphs, sentences or words, and you can copy the result with one click.
Why use placeholder text
When a mockup is filled with meaningful sentences, reviewers start reading and commenting on the wording. Placeholder text avoids that. People look at the headings, spacing, line length, font size and balance of the page instead of the message.
It also fills space with realistic shapes. Real writing has long and short words, commas and full stops, and a layout needs to cope with all of them. A row of identical letters would not show you how lines wrap or where paragraphs break.
Common uses include:
- Website and app mockups, before the copy is written.
- Templates for blogs, newsletters and documents.
- Testing how long text behaves in cards, tables and buttons.
- Checking fonts and type scales.
- Filling test data for developers.
How this generator builds its text
The text is built from a fixed list of words, using a fixed pattern. There is no randomness at all. If you ask for three paragraphs twice, you get exactly the same three paragraphs, and if you ask for five paragraphs, the first three are the same as before. This is on purpose. Stable output makes mockups easy to compare, and it makes automated tests simple to write, because a test can expect an exact result.
Within that pattern the text still looks natural:
- Sentences have between 5 and 13 words. They start with a capital letter, end with a full stop, and many have one comma in the middle.
- Paragraphs have between 3 and 5 sentences.
- No word appears twice in a row, which would look like a typing error.
The words come from the traditional placeholder vocabulary. Because the sentences are assembled by this tool, they will not match the classic passage you may have seen elsewhere, apart from the opening line.
Paragraphs, sentences or words
Choose the unit that matches the space you need to fill.
Paragraphs suit page bodies, articles and long descriptions. Each paragraph is separated from the next by a blank line.
Sentences suit captions, card descriptions, teasers and short summaries. They come as one block of text.
Words suit headings, buttons, menu labels and table cells. When you ask for five words with the classic opening switched on, you get "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", the line most people expect.
If you need to check how long a result is, paste it into the word counter or the character counter. The counters are useful for setting limits, such as a headline that must stay under a fixed number of characters.
The classic opening
Tick Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and the text begins with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit". Many designers like this because it is instantly recognisable as filler, so nobody mistakes it for finished copy. With the option off, the text begins with other words from the list. Either way, the result is the same every time.
Plain text or HTML
Plain text gives you clean words that you can paste into a design tool, a document or a spreadsheet. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
HTML wraps each paragraph in a p tag, so you can paste the result straight into a web page or a template. When you generate sentences or words, the whole result is wrapped in a single p tag. The tool adds no styles, classes or other tags, so the code stays clean. If you need a different case for a heading, the text case converter can change the result to Title Case or UPPERCASE.
The size limit
You can generate up to 5,000 words in one go. That is the same as 450 sentences or 100 paragraphs, because paragraphs and sentences are built from words. If you type a bigger number, the tool sets it to the maximum and shows a message, so the page never freezes. For a very long document, generate the text in several parts and join them.
Tips for using placeholder text well
- Replace it before launch. A live page that still shows placeholder text looks unfinished and gives visitors nothing useful. Search the page for the filler before you publish.
- Match the real length. If your real headings will be short, use a few words. If your real descriptions run to three lines, use a sentence or two. Realistic lengths expose layout problems early.
- Test the extremes. Try one very short and one very long piece of text in each space, because real content is rarely average.
Privacy
This tool runs in your browser. The text is created on your own device from a built-in list, and nothing you choose is sent to a server, saved or tracked. There is no sign-up. Like every page on this site, this one may show ads from third-party vendors once ads are switched on, and those vendors can use cookies. Read the privacy policy for details.
